Panchakarma Treatment- What is it?

The treatment of Panchakarma in Sydney is an ayurvedic method of cleansing the body of all unwanted waste by lubricating it. The term “Panch” means five and “Karma” means the procedure that is involved in this context. Hence, the ayurvedic panchakarma treatment consists of five procedures. It is based on preventive, promotive, and curative actions, for numerous diseases in the human body.

The Five Karmas in Panchakarma Treatment

For Panchakarma treatment, the body is divided into parts that need cleansing. These parts include the head, GIT (gastrointestinal system), and upper-lower parts of the body. Now, let’s take a look at the five “Karmas” or procedures, to clean the body.

  • Vamanam (Vomiting/ Therapeutic Emesis): It is the process of induced vomiting that helps in clearing the upper-gastro tract till the end of the stomach along with part of the respiratory tract.
  • Virechanam (Purgation): This involves the process of induced bowel movement. It helps in clearing the path from the end of the stomach until the body’s exit. Products of Ayurveda in Sydney that contain laxatives help in this procedure.
  • Anuvasana (Ayurvedic Enema using medicated oil): Oil ayurvedic enema helps in lubricating the rectal area, thereby eradicating soluble waste through the anus.
  • Nasyam: It is the nasal instillation of medicated ayurvedic substances that help in the clearance of the body’s upper respiratory tract. With the help of this treatment, you can also get relief from paranasal sinuses.
  • Astapana Vasti (Therapeutic Decoction Enema): In this procedure, a decoction enema is administered that cleanses the area starting from the colon to the anus.

The Different Steps of Panchakarma

The process of Panchakarma in Sydney involves three basic steps:

Step 1: Poorva Karma: This is the preparatory stage before the primary panchakarma treatment. As the name suggests “Poorva” means “before”. This is a procedure that prepares the body to receive Panchakarma benefits to their maximum. It involves two main processes- Snehan (oil), and Swedan (sweating).

Snehan: This Panchakarma treatment procedure is done in either of two ways:

  • Bahya: This means “external.” It involves massaging medicated or herbal oil onto the body and waiting till the bloodstream absorbs it.
  • Abhyantar: This means “internal.” This procedure consists of ingesting medicated edible oil or ghee.

Swedan: This means “sweating”. This process involves heating up a specific part of the body to promote sweating. The heat melts toxins in the body, thereby removing them through sweat.

Step 2: Pradhan Karma: This is the main procedure. “Pradhan” here means “important” or “main”. It is in this step that the practitioner decides which of the five methods are to be performed: Vamanam, Virechanam, Anuvasana, Nasyam, or Astapana Vasti.

Step 3: Paschat Karma: This is a post-therapy regimen. “Paschat” means “after”. It includes a set of dietary rules and regulations that helps in restoring the body’s digestive functions to a balanced state.
